Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad expressed his disappointment and questioned the team’s strategy after the 11-run defeat to South Africa in the first T20I in Durban.
The Proteas, buoyed by standout performances from George Linde and David Miller, clinched the series opener in a high-scoring encounter.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, Shehzad expressed his concerns over Pakistan’s tactical approach, particularly their decision-making in the final plays.
“Pakistan had a brilliant opportunity to restrict South Africa to around 150, but the defensive approach allowed them to get a very good total,” Shehzad posted.
“Give the last word to your spinner Sufiyan and expose your son like tonight – this way you won’t be able to prepare any youngster. Tough pursuit but I hope our players can achieve that,” he added.
Batting first, the hosts posted a challenging 183/9. George Linde’s explosive 48 off 24 balls and David Miller’s scintillating 82 off 40 balls set the tone for the Proteas.
Despite commendable efforts from Shaheen Afridi and Abrar Ahmed who took three wickets, Pakistan struggled to contain the hosts at the death.
Young spinner Sufiyan Muqeem conceded 53 runs in his four overs, taking one wicket, including three sixes in the final over, which allowed South Africa to post an imposing total.
In response, Pakistan’s batting line-up fell short, managing 172/8.
Mohammad Rizwan’s courageous 74 off 62 balls and Saim Ayub’s 31 off 15 balls kept the chase alive but the required run rate proved to be too steep.
George Linde also shone with the ball, making 4/21, while Kwena Maphaka added two crucial wickets to seal the game for South Africa.
It is pertinent to note that the second T20I between the two teams will take place in Centurion this Friday.
