COLOMBO: Prem Thakkur, owner of Lanka T10 Super League franchise Galle Marvels, has been arrested by the Sri Lanka Sports Police Unit on charges of match-fixing, reports said on Friday.
According to reports, Thakkur was arrested from a local hotel on Thursday in Kandy, where the tournament is being played.
He was then produced before the Colombo Magistrates Court on Friday and was remanded until December 16.
“The owner of the ‘Galle Marvels’ team in the Lanka T10 Super League has been arrested and will be produced before the court on Friday,” police said.
Reports further suggested that Thakkur was accused by a foreign player for approaching him to fix matches in the Lanka T10 Super League.
While Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is yet to issue an official statement on the matter, Lanka T10 League tournament director Samantha Dodanwela has confirmed that the tournament will “go ahead as scheduled”.
This is the second franchise tournament in Sri Lanka this year in which an owner has been arrested on match-fixing charges. In early May, Tamim Rahman, co-owner of LPL franchise Dambulla Thunders, was arrested for the same reasons.
