HURLINGHAM: Argentine pacer Hernan Fennell on Sunday equaled Australian Pat Cummins’ T20I record with a double hat-trick during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas sub-regional qualifier against the Cayman Islands here at the Hurlingham Club Ground.
The right-hand pacer, who dismissed Troy Taylor, Alistair Ifill, Ronald Ebanks and Alessandro Morris of the Cayman Islands in consecutive deliveries in an eventful final of the touring team’s innings, became only the sixth bowler to record a double hat-trick in the format.
As a result, Fennell joined an elusive list of bowlers, including the likes of Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, Ireland’s Curtis Campher, West Indies’ Jason Holder and Lesotho’s Arif Yaqoob.
Double hat-tricks in men’s T20I
Player | Opposition | Year |
Rashid Khan | Ireland | 2019 |
Lasith Malinga | New Zealand | 2019 |
Curtis Campher | Netherlands | 2021 |
Jason Holder | England | 2022 |
Waseem Yaqoob | Mali | 2024 |

His bowling exploits culminated in match figures of 5/14 in four overs.
Notably, this was his second hat-trick in men’s T20Is, with the first coming against Panama in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 Americas region qualifier.
The achievement put him on par with the game’s top bowlers such as New Zealand’s Tim Southee, Cummins, Malinga, Matla’s Waseem Abbas and Serbia’s Mark Pavlovic, who have achieved several hat-tricks in men’s T20Is.
Despite their bowling heroics, Argentina ended up losing the side as they were bowled out for 94 while chasing a modest target of 117 runs and thus succumbed to a 22-run defeat.
