DURBAN: Pakistan white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan has addressed the speculation surrounding Fakhar Zaman’s omission from the national squad for the tour of South Africa.
In a video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Rizwan emphasized that Fakhar’s exclusion was not motivated by personal prejudices.
“I think all of Pakistan knows Fakhar Zaman, and there is nothing personal about him that would make anyone feel like they are being treated unfairly. From the conversations we have had among ourselves, everyone is hopeful about him because he is something different for Pakistan – he is a game-changing character,” Rizwan said.
The wicketkeeper batsman also revealed that his omission from the squad was not just due to physical issues.
“I don’t think anyone knows that he’s not well, basically. It’s not just a fitness issue, which means it’s not like he failed a fitness test. As far as I know personally, he’s sick, with something like a viral fever. Because of this illness, he has been advised to participate in the T20 tournament in Pakistan and, God forbid, if something serious happens, the doctors will take care of him properly,” he said.
The 32-year-old further explained that the selection committee, technical committee and PCB management were all aware of the situation and supported Fakhar’s recovery.
“I also discussed this matter with the selection committee, and the coach and PCB management were informed to take good care of Fakhar. So there is nothing personal against him – the whole of Pakistan knows this. I will return to the Pakistan team soon,” he added.
Contrary to these claims, the 34-year-old, who currently represents the Markhors in the Champions T20 Cup, rejected the idea that he is unfit.
“I’m in good shape and that’s why I’m playing. If I get the chance, I’ll play. I started my career in the Champions Trophy and I’m grateful that my performances were good and that we won matches there. In this Champions Trophy, my only effort will be to play well and win games,” said Fakhar.
Last month, interim white ball coach Aaqib Javed addressed Fakhar’s selection, citing physical challenges as the reason for his omission.
“Fakhar is a winner; he has been playing for Pakistan for many years. He was having some physical problems,” shared Aaqib.
“We are in communication with Fakhar. Whenever he is fit, the selection committee will definitely consider him for selection, and you will see him (playing) in the future,” he added.
However, the left-handed batsman failed to make the white-ball team for the upcoming tour. In a statement released by the PCB, Javed reiterated that concerns over his physical condition were the reason for his exclusion.
“Fakhar Zaman was not considered as he is yet to regain form and is fit,” Javed was quoted by the PCB.
For the unversed, the opening batsman’s last appearance for the green shirts came during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June.
