NEW DELHI: The appointment of Jay Shah as president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has left the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a difficult situation to find his successor, Indian media reported on Thursday.
According to a report, the Indian council is having difficulty finding a replacement for Shah, who took over as ICC chairman on Sunday.
According to the BCCI Constitution, a successor must be elected at an extraordinary general meeting.
The details further shared that the candidates are reluctant to use one year out of the total six years of holding the BCCI before heading towards the BCCI Elections scheduled to take place next year.
To add to the complexity, the board’s treasurer, Ashish Shelar, will run for a ministerial post as the Maharashtra government prepares to form its cabinet.
“The big issue is that the council is not finding a strong candidate for the position of secretary who is willing to use one year of his term. In any case, the BCCI will have an election next year. at BCCI, he will be in an insecure situation as he enters the subsequent term after next year’s election. There could be a chance that someone could be elevated to an interim role,” a BCCI source quoted the Indian news website as saying.
“These decisions were taken unanimously after the Supreme Court-appointed committee of administrators left in 2019. An idea of an election for the position was also floated,” the source added.
The report also shared that concerns were raised by some state associations regarding the functioning of the council without a secretary.
Whereas, Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Anil Patel and Delhi and District Cricket Association president Rohan Jaitley are in contention for the post.
