JOHANNESBURG: South Africa suffered a major injury setback when right-hand pacer Ottneil Baartman was ruled out of the third ODI against Pakistan, scheduled to be played at The Wanderers Stadium here on Sunday.
The right-hand pacer, who took two wickets for 37 runs in seven overs in the series opener in Paarl on Tuesday, was not part of the hosts’ squad for the next game.
The development came after the 31-year-old complained of discomfort in his right knee during the warm-up.
As a result, Baartman was replaced by 30-year-old all-rounder Corbin Bosch in the South African squad for the remaining game.
For those unaware, Ottneil Baartman’s injury is the second setback for the hosts in the ongoing three-match series as left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj is already sidelined with a groin strain.
According to a report, Maharaj suffered the injury during the home team’s warm-up for the opening ODI series against Pakistan.
The report further suggested that the left-arm spinner was part of South Africa’s playing XI for the opening game, but his untimely injury forced the hosts to replace him with Andile Phehlukwayo.
It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match series. The visitors edged past the Proteas by three wickets in the opener, before backing it up with an 81-run triumph in the second ODI.
